Carving a Vision and Lasting Legacy
By Melissa McGath | August 20, 2025
On a recent road trip to Mount Rushmore, I learned about Gutzon Borglum, the visionary and sculptor behind the massive monument. He began chiseling in 1927, and 14 years later the carving was complete. Unfortunately, Borglum died before seeing the finished masterpiece, yet his legacy lives on, impacting millions of visitors each year.
As the CEO of a business, Borglum’s work inspired me: Are we building something that will live on beyond us? Is our vision—and the actions we are taking now—creating a sustainable business that leaves a lasting legacy for the next generation?
Borglum’s story reminds me of Jim Collins’ Good to Great and the Level 5 Leadership Pyramid.
Collins describes leadership as a progression. Each level builds on the one below it, culminating in the Level 5 Executive: a leader who blends deep humility with fierce resolve. Borglum embodied that spirit. His work wasn’t about personal recognition; it was about carving a vision that outlasted him. That’s the calling for purpose-driven CEOs as well: to create missions rooted in humility, driven by conviction, and anchored in something bigger than us.
Borglum reached that fifth level. His vision outlasted him in a profound way. He left a beautiful legacy that has become a symbol of our nation and has provided inspiration for families and visitors for nearly 100 years.

So, how will you ensure the organization God has entrusted to you will thrive beyond your leadership? Do you need to refine your vision? Here are five practical steps to guide the process:
1. Reaffirm Your Purpose – Revisit why your organization exists. What do you want your legacy to be? Clarify the deeper mission and values that should drive everything forward.
2. Evaluate the Current State – Look honestly at your existing vision. Is it clear? Is it lived out in daily decisions and actions? Where are the gaps?
3. Engage Key Voices – Involve your leadership team and trusted stakeholders in shaping the vision. Diverse perspectives ensure it reflects both reality and opportunity.
4. Rewrite with Clarity – Put the vision into simple, inspiring language. It should be memorable, actionable, and easy for everyone to communicate consistently.
5. Align and Execute – Translate the vision into priorities, goals, and systems. Then reinforce it regularly so it becomes part of your culture.
A clear, purposeful, actionable vision drives sustainable growth that strengthens leadership for generations to come. But no matter how strong our vision or strategies may be, they will truly endure only if they’re built on the firm foundation of the Lord and His principles. Borglum’s beautiful work reminds us that true leadership is measured not by what we complete ourselves, but by the inspiration and direction that continue to guide others long after we’re gone.
