Timing is Everything: How Prayer Aligns Us with God’s Perfect Timing
By Melissa McGath | June 24, 2025
A few weeks ago, I followed up on a contact who requested I reach out at the end of the month. Before I knew it, it was the last day of the month and a Friday afternoon. I had a pang of guilt and the “Negative Nelly” voice inside my head said, This is literally the worst time to follow up.
Realizing there was nothing I could do, I paused and prayed, “Lord, give me wisdom.” And almost instantly, I felt a nudge: Just make the call.
So I did. I left a voicemail, still half-thinking, It’s a beautiful Friday—of course no one’s picking up their phone today. But less than an hour later, I got a call back.
“You’re not going to believe this,” he said. “I was just in a meeting, and your name came up. I walked back to my desk, and there was your voicemail.”
In my amazement and almost disbelief, I laughed and said, “The Lord works in mysterious ways.”
That small experience reaffirmed something I’ve come to rely on as a business owner and believer: Prayer is an opportunity to pause and check in with our number one accountability partner. He’s always there, ready to listen, guide, and provide an answer. Our prayer doesn’t replace the need to strategize, plan, or share our expertise; it enhances them. It shifts our focus from self-reliance to dependence on the One who sees the full picture.
Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding; in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
And Jeremiah 17:7 says, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.”
These words of comfort give us instructions for how we lead, decide, and faithfully steward what God has entrusted to us. And in moments of uncertainty- like that Friday afternoon- prayer reminds me: God is already working on the other side.
How have you seen God’s timing in your own business journey? We’d love to hear your stories and encourage one another as we walk in bold faith as leaders.
